Today's map, of either Manhattan or the southern reaches of Bergen county, is actually from a larger birds eye view of Newark at the turn of the last century and part of the same series of maps featured in our previous post on trains in towns. It's a beautiful image (check out the close up), but also an excuse to talk about Bergen County, which was inexplicably home to some of the most amazingly disgusting 19th century facial hair in the world. Having tried to detail the geography of neck beards once before, I felt compelled to put together a special compilation of Bergen County Beards. Here are just a few of them:
